It's been quite a while since I last went plane spotting, and this was only my second time plane spotting at Lanseria International Airport which is located northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. I do pretty much all of my plane spotting at the much busier OR Tambo International Airport in the east of Johannesburg. On this day I arrived at the airport just in time as two beautiful Kulula.com Boeing 737s were on the tarmac just minutes away from departure. I managed to capture the first one as it took off but decided to take still photos of the second one. The photo at the end of the movie of the second aircraft as it took off.

But with issues such as 9/11 and hosting the 2010 football world cup, the airport that is ‘plagued by organised crime’ has to take security measures seriously. The film provides an insight into the problems and difficulties of security undertaken by Airport Company South Africa (ASCA) who owns Johannesberg International Airport. The airport suffers from a great deal of corruption and after many criminal incidents and concerns of terrorists, Operation Octopus commenced in 2001 to tighten airport security. Security was seen to be ‘abysmal’ according to Paul O’Sullivan (Group Executive of Security) and many airport employees were arrested. However, there are encouraging signs that ACSA are stepping up security especially in light of hosting the 2010 football world cup. New trainees have been employed and are to become ‘part of the new solution [rather than] new additions to the old problem’, employees are closely monitored and great efforts are being make to maintain a “security culture”. Upington Airport (IATA: UTN, ICAO: FAUP) is an airport located in Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa. At 4900 metres, runway 17/35 is one of the longest runways in the world. The high elevation of the airport, extremely high summer temperatures and the fact that it was designed for the Boeing 747 necessitated the extreme length of the main runway.
