Airport transfers in South Africa: taxis, e-hailing and shuttles

The South Africa airport guide

One South African airport has a train. At the other twenty-one the choice is a metered taxi from the official rank, an e-hailing car from a designated bay, a hotel shuttle or a hire car — and which is right changes with the time of day, the number of bags and where you are going.

The official rank, and why the touts are not it

Every ACSA airport has an official metered taxi rank, signposted from arrivals, where the operators are regulated and the tariff is posted. That is the one to use.

People who approach you inside the terminal offering a lift are not part of it. Decline and walk to the rank. This is not a South Africa-specific warning — it applies at most large airports — but the rank here is well marked and there is no reason to take the alternative.

E-hailing, and the bay problem

E-hailing works at South African airports, but pick-up is confined to designated bays, which are sometimes a level or a short walk from where the app drops its pin. Cape Town and O. R. Tambo both have signed e-hailing zones.

Follow the airport signs rather than the map. Drivers know the bay; the app often does not. The usual failure mode is a driver circling while the passenger stands somewhere the car is not allowed to stop.

Hotel shuttles

Most airport-adjacent hotels run a shuttle, and at King Shaka, Gqeberha and George the shuttle is the normal way to reach a hotel that a booking site describes as “near the airport”. Confirm the pick-up point and whether it needs booking: several run on request rather than on a timetable.

Typical distances

  • Cape Town to the city bowl — about 20 km, twenty to thirty minutes off-peak.
  • O. R. Tambo to Sandton — about 25 km, or fifteen minutes on the Gautrain.
  • King Shaka to Durban — 35 km; Umhlanga and Ballito are each about fifteen minutes.
  • Gqeberha — four kilometres, the shortest in the country.

What we do not publish

We do not quote transfer fares. Airport transfer pricing is the fastest-rotting information in travel, and the figures repeated on blogs are frequently years old. The official rank posts its tariff; e-hailing quotes before you book.

Choosing between the four options

Outside Johannesburg every South African airport transfer is a road transfer, and there are four of them. The right one depends on the hour, the party and the destination rather than on which is cheapest.

  • The official metered rank. Always available, always at the signed rank outside arrivals, and the default if nothing is arranged. It costs more than e-hailing and it is the option that needs no app, no signal and no account.
  • E-hailing. Cheaper, and the price is known before you get in, which removes the one thing travellers worry about. The complication is the pick-up bay rather than the car. At both O. R. Tambo and Cape Town the bay is a designated place that is not always where the app drops its pin — follow the airport signs, not the map.
  • A hotel shuttle. The best option for a late arrival, because somebody is waiting with your name and the journey is already paid for. Arrange it when you book the room, not on the day.
  • A hire car. Worth it when the airport is the start of a drive rather than a trip into a city. The car hire guide.

Arriving at night

This is the scenario worth planning rather than improvising, and the advice is the same at all nine airports: use the official rank or the signed e-hailing bay, and nothing else. Accept no offer of a lift made to you inside the terminal, in the car park or on the kerb, however official the person sounds. Drivers at the rank are registered and the rank is supervised; a man with a lanyard approaching you in the arrivals hall is neither.

Two airports deserve a specific note. At King Shaka the airport is 35 km north of Durban and evening arrivals thin out early, so an unarranged late transfer is the one case where that distance genuinely bites — book it, or stay in Umhlanga or Ballito, both about fifteen minutes away. At O. R. Tambo the Gautrain does not run through the night, so an arrival in the early-morning long-haul bank may still be a road transfer; check the first departure for your date before assuming the train solves it.

How long the journey really takes

Distances in South Africa are short and traffic is the variable, which is the opposite of the assumption most visitors arrive with.

  • O. R. Tambo to Sandton or central Johannesburg: about 25 km. Twenty-five minutes at ten at night, an hour in the weekday peak. The Gautrain does it in about fifteen minutes regardless, which is its whole value.
  • Cape Town to the city bowl: about 20 km, twenty to thirty minutes off-peak, closer to an hour when the N2 is at its worst.
  • Cape Town to Stellenbosch or the Winelands: about forty minutes.
  • King Shaka to Umhlanga: about fifteen minutes. To Ballito: about the same, northwards. To central Durban: thirty to forty on a clear N2.

We publish no transfer prices anywhere on this site. Fares move, operators change and a figure quoted from a blog is the fastest way to arrive at an airport with the wrong amount of money in your head. The meter, the app and the hotel’s own quote are the three sources worth having.

Common questions

Is there a train from any South African airport?

Only O. R. Tambo, via the Gautrain to Sandton and the wider Gauteng network. See the Gautrain guide.

Can I use Uber or Bolt at South African airports?

Yes, but pick-up is restricted to designated bays that may not match where the app places the pin. Follow the airport signs to the e-hailing zone.

How do I get from Cape Town airport to the city?

Metered taxi from the official rank, e-hailing from the signed bay, a hotel shuttle or a hire car. About 20 km and twenty to thirty minutes when the N2 is clear.

Should I pre-book an airport transfer?

Worth it for a late arrival, a large group or a destination outside the city. For a straightforward daytime run into town, the official rank or an e-hailing app is simpler.

Checked 1 November 2026. Where a figure moves — a fare, a tariff, an opening hour — we say so rather than publish a number we cannot stand behind today. How we source and check everything on this site.

Is it safe to take a taxi from a South African airport at night?

From the official rank or the signed e-hailing bay, yes — those are supervised and the drivers are registered. What to decline is an offer of a lift made to you inside the terminal, in the car park or on the kerb, regardless of how official the person appears. For a late arrival a pre-booked hotel shuttle removes the decision entirely.

How far is King Shaka from Durban?

About 35 km north, thirty to forty minutes on a clear N2. Umhlanga is about fifteen minutes from the airport and Ballito about the same in the other direction, so a hotel on the coast north of Durban is often a shorter transfer than one on the beachfront.

Can I pay for an airport transfer by card?

Card payment is accepted very widely in South Africa, including by metered taxis and at airport parking, and e-hailing is charged to the app. Most visitors never need cash for a transfer. Carrying a small amount anyway costs nothing and covers the exceptions.
