This policy explains what happens to data when you visit southafricaairports.com. It is written to be read, not to be waved at a regulator, so it is specific about what we actually do rather than listing everything we might conceivably do.
The short version. We do not ask you for any personal information. We have no accounts, no newsletter and no forms. We cannot identify you. The one thing on this site that collects data about you is the advertising, which is served by Google, and you can turn the personalised part of that off in two clicks using the link further down this page.
What we collect ourselves
Nothing you type, because there is nothing to type into.
Like every web server, ours records a line in a log each time a page is requested: the IP address the request came from, the time, the page, the referring page if there is one, and the browser’s user-agent string. These logs are kept by our hosting provider for a short period and are used only to keep the site running and to investigate abuse or technical faults. We do not use them to build a profile of you and we do not combine them with anything else.
Cookies
The site itself sets no cookies for ordinary visitors. WordPress sets cookies only for people who log in to edit the site, which is not you.
Third-party cookies and similar technologies may be set by the services described below. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will work normally without them.
Advertising
This site carries display advertising supplied by Google AdSense. It is our only source of revenue and it is what pays for the research behind the pages.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. Opting out does not remove advertising; it makes it non-personalised.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising from many other vendors at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
- Google’s own explanation of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for consent before personalised advertising cookies are set, through the consent notice Google serves on our behalf. You can change or withdraw that consent at any time from that notice, or from Google Ads Settings.
Audience measurement
We use Google Analytics to count how many people read which pages, where they arrived from and roughly where in the world they are. We look at this in aggregate, to decide which airports to write about next. We do not use it to identify individuals and we do not sell or share it. Google Analytics does not store full IP addresses; they are used to derive an approximate location and then discarded. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data at all with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
What we never do
- We never sell personal data.
- We never ask for your name, address, passport details, payment details or travel plans.
- We do not operate a mailing list.
- We do not knowingly collect information from children, and nothing on this site is directed at them.
Your rights
South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) gives you the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected, and to have it deleted. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation gives you equivalent rights, plus the right to object to processing and to complain to your national supervisory authority.
In practice we hold almost nothing that could identify you, so the honest answer to most such requests will be that we have no record of you. You are entitled to ask anyway, and we will answer. Write to us through the contact page.
External links
We link to airports, airlines, government departments and other sites so you can check what we have written. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we have no control over them. A link is not an endorsement of their data practices, or of anything else about them.
Changes to this policy
If we start doing something with data that this page does not describe, we will update the page before we start, not after. The date this policy was last revised is shown at the top of the page.
