Airport arrivals in South Africa: how long clearing really takes

The South Africa airport guide

Meeting someone, and how long a flight really takes to clear

The useful question when you are meeting someone is not when the aircraft lands. It is when they walk out of the door. Those are two very different times at a South African airport, and the gap between them varies by more than an hour depending on which airport and which hour of the day.

How long after landing before they appear

Count from the landing time, not the scheduled arrival, and allow:

  • Domestic, hand luggage only — fifteen to twenty minutes.
  • Domestic with a checked bag — about thirty minutes.
  • International, a quiet hour — forty-five minutes to an hour.
  • International at O. R. Tambo between five and eight in the morning — sixty to ninety minutes, sometimes more.

That last case is the one that catches people out. The long-haul bank into Johannesburg arrives in a cluster at dawn, and passport control backs up accordingly. If you are collecting someone off a European or Middle Eastern overnight flight, do not plan to be at the kerb at the landing time.

Where to wait

Arrivals halls at South African airports are public and outside customs, so you can wait without a ticket and without buying anything. There is no viewing platform or paid meeting area to worry about.

Do not circle the terminal. The kerbside lane at O. R. Tambo and Cape Town is actively policed, and overstaying is charged at the short-stay rate. Park in the short-stay deck: it is a few minutes’ walk and it costs less than the fuel and the risk of being moved on twice.

Tracking the flight properly

Airline apps and flight trackers show the landing time, which is what you want — not the scheduled arrival, which is what most people check. Set an alert for the actual touchdown and start your clock there.

One South African quirk: a flight arriving from elsewhere in Africa is handled as international even though the flying time is short, so the clearance time is the international one, not the domestic one.

If a bag does not arrive

The claim is with the airline, not the airport, and it must be filed before you leave the baggage hall. Items left in the terminal itself — a laptop at a gate, a coat in a lounge — go to the airport lost-property office, which is a different department with a different number. See luggage and lost property.

Why the morning is different from the rest of the day

Clearance times at O. R. Tambo are not a constant with occasional bad days. They are a curve, and the curve is driven by the schedule rather than by staffing.

Long-haul flights from Europe, the Gulf and North America leave the previous evening and take roughly the same time to reach Johannesburg, so they land in a bank between about five and eight in the morning. In that window the immigration hall receives a large share of the airport’s entire international arrival volume at once. The same hall, with the same officers, clears an arriving flight in ten minutes at two in the afternoon.

So the useful question is not “how long does it take at O. R. Tambo” but “how long does it take at the hour my flight lands”. If you are meeting someone off a 06:10 arrival, sixty to ninety minutes is realistic. Off a 14:00 arrival, thirty is.

What happens between the aircraft and the doors

Knowing the stages makes the wait legible, and tells you which part of it a delay belongs to.

  1. Disembarking and the walk to immigration. Five to fifteen minutes. The international pier at O. R. Tambo is long, and a bussed stand adds more.
  2. Passport control. The variable stage, as above.
  3. Baggage reclaim. Usually running by the time you arrive, so it overlaps the queue rather than adding to it.
  4. Customs. Two minutes in the green channel unless something is selected for inspection.
  5. The doors. Public arrivals halls, so anyone can be standing there.

Since 1 July 2026 there is also an online Traveller Declaration to have completed before any of this, required of everyone entering the country including children. It does not add a stage at the airport if you did it in advance, and it adds one if you did not. How the declaration works.

Meeting someone: the practical version

  • Budget from the landing time, not the scheduled arrival. They are often half an hour apart and only one of them is a fact.
  • Park, do not circle. The kerbside drop-off lanes at O. R. Tambo and Cape Town are policed and timed, and overstaying is charged at the short-stay rate. The short-stay deck is a few minutes from the doors and costs less than the lap you were going to drive.
  • Agree a meeting point that is not “arrivals”. At O. R. Tambo there are two arrivals halls in two terminals. Name the terminal.
  • Expect no phone signal until after passport control, and sometimes not until the doors. Silence is not information.
  • For an international arrival in the morning bank, do not be there at the landing time. You will stand for an hour. Arrive forty-five minutes after it.

Common questions

How long does it take to clear a flight at O. R. Tambo?

Fifteen to twenty minutes for a domestic passenger with hand luggage, about thirty with a checked bag, and sixty to ninety minutes for an international arrival in the early-morning bank between five and eight.

Can I wait inside the terminal for an arrival?

Yes. South African arrivals halls are public and outside customs. You do not need a ticket.

Where should I park to meet someone?

The short-stay deck. The kerbside lane is time-limited and enforced at O. R. Tambo and Cape Town, and overstaying is charged at the short-stay rate anyway.

Are flights from other African countries treated as international?

Yes. Regional arrivals clear immigration and customs like any other international flight, so allow the international clearance time even on a short hop.

Checked 1 November 2026. Where a figure moves — a fare, a tariff, an opening hour — we say so rather than publish a number we cannot stand behind today. How we source and check everything on this site.

Why is passport control slower on some flights than others?

Because of when the flight lands rather than where it came from. Long-haul arrivals cluster between about five and eight in the morning at O. R. Tambo, and the hall is sized for an average rather than that peak. The same flight landing in the afternoon clears in a fraction of the time.

Do I need to do anything before I land in South Africa?

Yes, since 1 July 2026: an online Traveller Declaration, submitted no more than 24 hours before departure from the country you are travelling from. Everyone needs one, children and infants included. You will not be refused entry for having skipped it, but completing it at the airport is one more thing to do in a queue.

How long do arrivals take at Cape Town and King Shaka?

Faster than at O. R. Tambo, because fewer international flights land at once. Cape Town recorded 3,128,631 international passengers in 2025/26 against O. R. Tambo’s 8,196,340, and King Shaka only 296,387, so the arrivals peak at both is far gentler.
