The South Africa airport guide
Left luggage, oversize items and bags that do not arrive

Left luggage exists at two South African airports and essentially nowhere else. And when a checked bag does not arrive, the claim is with the airline rather than the airport — which is a different office, a different number and a deadline you have to meet before you leave the hall.
At a glance
- Left luggage
- JNB and CPT only
- Missing checked bag
- Claim with the airline
- Left in the terminal
- Airport lost property
Left luggage: two airports only
O. R. Tambo and Cape Town have left-luggage facilities, both landside, charged per item per day. Everywhere else in the country, effectively none.
If you are routing through a regional airport with a long gap — or planning a day in a city between flights — plan to keep your bag with you, or to leave it at a hotel. Many hotels will hold luggage for guests on the day of departure without charge.
Oversize and awkward items
Surfboards, golf clubs, bicycles and firearms each have their own rules, and they belong to the airline rather than the airport. Declare them at booking, not at the desk: an oversize item presented without notice may simply not travel.
Firearms in particular require advance arrangement and paperwork in South Africa, and are handled at a dedicated counter.
If a checked bag does not arrive
Two rules, both of which people get wrong:
- The claim is with the airline, not the airport.
- It must be filed before you leave the baggage hall. Once you walk out, you are arguing from a much weaker position.
Find the airline’s baggage desk in the hall, file the report, and keep the reference. Photograph the bag before you travel if it is unusual — describing a suitcase from memory is harder than it sounds.
Lost property is a different department
Something left in the terminal itself — a laptop at a gate, a coat in a lounge, a passport on a seat — goes to the airport’s lost-property office, which is separate from airline baggage services and has its own contact number.
If you are not sure which applies: if the item was ever in the airline’s hands, it is the airline. If you put it down yourself, it is the airport.
What to do in the first hour a bag is missing
Most delayed bags are not lost. They missed a loading window, usually during a connection, and they arrive on the next service. What determines whether you get yours back quickly is entirely what you do before you leave the arrivals hall.
- Do not leave the baggage hall. Once you are through customs, reporting becomes slower and in some cases a different process. This is the single most important step.
- Report it at the baggage services desk of the airline that operated your last flight, which is not necessarily the one you booked with.
- Get a reference number in writing — the property irregularity report. Without it you have no claim and no way to track anything.
- Give an address that will work for a week, not a hotel you leave tomorrow. If you are touring, give the one place you will reliably be.
- Keep every receipt for anything you have to buy because the bag is not there. Reimbursement depends on them.
- Photograph your bag tag stub and the receipt before you hand anything over.
On a connection through O. R. Tambo there is one structural point worth knowing. Because South Africa requires arriving passengers to reclaim their own checked baggage at the first point of entry, the bag has to physically find you in Johannesburg even when the tag shows Cape Town. That is a stage where a bag can be delayed, and it is also why a hand-luggage-only connection removes the problem entirely. The full connection guide.
What packing in the cabin actually prevents
The list is short and it is the same every time: medication, documents, keys, valuables, chargers and one change of clothes. Prescription medication in particular should never go in the hold, both because you may need it before the bag arrives and because customs expects controlled medicines to be with you in their original packaging with the prescription.
If you are travelling with children, add whatever makes the next twelve hours possible without the suitcase. The documents a child needs to enter South Africa — passport, parentage document, consent affidavit — belong in hand luggage for the same reason: they are needed at the counter, before any bag appears. The documents for children.
Left luggage: plan around its absence
Storage facilities exist at very few South African airports, and the sensible planning assumption is that there will not be one. A day in Cape Town between a morning arrival and an evening flight is a common idea and a poor one if it depends on dropping bags at the terminal.
Two alternatives work better. A hotel will usually hold bags for a guest on the day of arrival or departure, before check-in or after check-out, and often for a non-guest who has booked something else with them. And at O. R. Tambo specifically, the Gautrain makes a few hours in Sandton practical in a way that carrying luggage around a city is not — a hotel there can hold the bags while you use the time.
Common questions
Can I store luggage at a South African airport?
At O. R. Tambo and Cape Town, both landside and charged per item per day. Effectively nowhere else.
My bag did not arrive. Who do I contact?
The airline, at its baggage desk in the arrivals hall, before you leave the hall. The airport is not responsible for checked baggage.
I left something at the gate. Who has it?
The airport lost-property office, which is separate from airline baggage services and has its own number.

What should I never pack in checked luggage?
Medication, travel documents, keys, valuables, chargers and one change of clothes. For a child travelling to South Africa, add the passport, the parentage document and any consent affidavit — those are needed at the check-in counter, long before a suitcase appears.
My bag did not arrive. How long before it is considered lost?
Airlines generally treat a bag as delayed rather than lost for the first three weeks, and most delayed bags arrive on the next service. What matters is reporting it before you leave the baggage hall and getting a written reference number, because without that there is nothing to trace and nothing to claim against.
Can a hotel hold my bags instead?
Usually, on the day you arrive or depart, and that is the better plan than relying on airport storage, which exists at very few South African airports. At O. R. Tambo the Gautrain also makes a few hours in Sandton practical, which is where a hotel luggage room is easiest to find.
